philosophy pt2

So today we continued the video that were watching in class about philosophy. Mr Schick also shared a story about how he bought a homeless man a meal and learned is story. It was very sad but in the video we learned about the three parts of philosophy it also aloud us to really understand the meaning of philosophy. This is going to be a short blog because we had a lot of discussions today instead of watching the video.

philosophy

so today we watched a video about philosophy and the many definitions it has. We also learned that plato and Aristotle had rival schools that they founded. We also started a new thing that every morning we will say a prayer for the victims of the mass shootings since we have been alive. This is gonna be short because I forgot my notebook at school but we really didn't take a lot of notes.

project

So today we went over the information and created groups for our new project in western civilization. I am working with Owen and Frankie. Our topic will be on the trireme which was the boat the greeks created. For this project we have to research a topic about Ancient Greece and then create a real life model along with a one page paper and then present our topic to the class. A lot of people are going to be doing food which is pretty cool. We didn't get the chance to fully start our project and we didn't take any notes so this is going to be a short blog.

Philosophy

So today in class we took notes on some of the famous philosophers in Ancient Greece.
AS you know we learned a little about socrates and how he died because he was charged with impiety and the corruption of the youth of Athens. Well at the jury held against socrates one of his students attended his name was Plato. Plato was a student and follower of socrates. Plato wrote out socrates teachings and described his trial in apology which is like a explanation in Ancient Greece. He is the reason why we know more about socrates than Homer. The republic was socrates discussion of justice and the ideal state. This is one of the most influential books ever written in philosophical history. Aristotle was a student of Plato. He helped foster the idea of Athens as an intellectual destination. Aristotle founded his own school called the lyceum. It focused on cooperative research- building on knowledge gathered from all over the world. He had the dream of mankind knowledge easily accessed in one place (Google). He was even the tutor of Alexander the great who says Aristotle was one of the biggest influences on him.

Test handback

So today we got our tests back we took last week. I was actually happy to see that I got a 95 out of 100 which is a very big heavy grade and since I did so well on it my grade was raised a lot. Before we went over the test we had to wait for two people to finish their test so we had to finish taking notes from the textbook.

  • The greeks created drama and the two types of drama comedies and tragedy
  • The wealthy had to bore the cost of the productions
  • tragedy had common themes such as love, war, hate
  • comedy usually had rude humor
  • Euripides and aristophanes were famous for their plays
  • Herodotus a greek who lived in Athens for a time was the one who pioneered the accurate recording of events
  • He was even the one who created the belief history will repeat its self
  • Thucydides was the greatest historian of the time
  • When the Peloponnesian war between city states began Athens had the stronger navy while Sparta had the stronger
  • Sparta eventually swept across the countryside destroying Athens food supply
  • Then a plague hit Athens and killed one third of the population including Pericles
  • After a failed attempt to destroy Syracuse a wealthy supporter of Sparta Athens was deemed totally destroyed in total.
These notes are a extension of what I got the last class and I still have more notes to take so I will still have a lot of info for my blogs this week.

The test

So today we had our mid unit test because Ancient Greece is a very big topic and is easier to learn in two parts. The test I think I did very well on and hopefully it will boost my grade up to a high B or an A. After I finished the test we had to take notes in our notebooks from the textbook and from the first two pages I already have a bunch of notes. I still have to finish reading all of the pages but when I'm done I'll put the notes I have into my blog.

  • From 477-431 B.C Athens experienced a growth in intellectual and artistic learning.
  • This period is known as the golden age of Athens
  • sculpture,Drama, poetry and philosophy all reached new heights in the golden age
  • A wise and able statesman named Pericles led Athens during much of its golden age, Pericles held onto popular support for 32 years
  • He was a skillful politician, inspiring speaker and a respected general
  • Pericles had 3 goals which were to strengthen democracy and the empire and to glorify Athens
  • The introduction of direct democracy was a important part in periclean Athens
  • Athens took control of the delian league and all of the city states in it, this allowed Pericles to use the funding for the league for things like glorifying Athens
  • He also used funds to make Athens navy the most powerful in the mediterranean
  • He dire ted the best artists of Athens and Greece to construct the pantheon
As you can see I got a good amount of notes and even more to come so I will have pretty info stuffed blogs. Enjoy!

review

so today we had a review for of half unit test that we have tomorrow. We basically went through Mr Schicks whole power point so people could get the info that they may not have. I really didn't have any missing notes but I did draw a diagram of what the seas around Greece look like and specific locations of important city states such as Athens and Sparta along with important nations that surrounded Ancient Greece like the Asia Minor and Crete along with Macedonia. For the test we have to remember the types of govt. and the different important leaders of Greece who are Cleisthenes, Draco, Solon. The project we did in class is basically our study guide for the test. We also have to remember the way Greeces geography affected and developed their culture along with the way it affected their customs. We also have to remember the different famous rivers of large famous civilizations. So as you can see there will be a lot on the test so I have to study along with all of the other test I have tomorrow.

video

So today in class we watched part of a video on Ancient Greece and we took some notes as well.

  • Greece laid the foundation for western civilization
  • Thermisticles was a famous military general in Ancient Greece
  • In 508 B.C. Athens turned on their leaders
  • Cleisthenes was raised to be a leader and was the one to start the road to a greek empire
  • Helis was the name used by the greeks for Greece itself
  • The acropolis in Athens was actually a military stronghold that could be a very good defensive position
  • The life expectancy from birth was the less than 15 years
  • Athens could hardly build a empire with a aristocratic government
  • Greece was a unlikely place to start a empire because of the terrain, this means it was impossible for Greece to be ruled by one ruler
  • Spartans were raised in the field and their life was structured around discipline
  • The spartans wore red to hide their blood if injured or killed
  • The spartans were though of as ruthless expansionists because they conquered more than 4,000 square miles.
  • The ancient tales and myths of the greek people influenced and shaped the people such as Cleisthenes
  • the vision of the hero was the example  Cleisthenes was brought up to follow
  • Pysisteris , Cleisthenes brother law used a tall woman as a fake Athena to take control of Athens. He lowered taxes to help farmers build their farms the best they could which increased the amount of olives being produced every season
  • Olive products were in high demand from countries around the Mediterranean Sea
  • The east Mediterranean Sea was the most popular and active trading area
  • The pottery created by the greeks to store certain products such as olive oil are now considered huge pieces of arts
  • With all of this economic activity with olives Athens became a international economic power
  • In 527 B.C Pysisteris died and his son Hippias took control, but after his brothers murder Hippias became a very violent and brutal leader and even began to not trust his advisers and people close to him
  • At this time the Aristocrtas were the biggest threat to Hippias
  • Cleisthenes created a conspiracy to overthrow Hippias and won then he banished Hippias from Athens
  • The Greeks were the creators of the Olympic Games. The olympic games in Ancient Greece were the largest gathering of Greeks from different city states in peace. Any person from any city state and any social class could compete against someone from any city state or any social class. There were no restrictions
  • Isagoras was the most ambitious conspiring against Cleisthenes and eventually overthrows Cleisthenes with the help of the Spartans.

So as you can see just from watching as video for 45 minutes you can get a lot of notes. It was nice to do something different for once in class not thats its boring, its good though to switch things up a bit.

  • Real spartans were much more fearsome than those oily gym rats in the movie 300

  • Athens had a great infantry but nothing could compare to their Navy
  • Their most effective weapon was the Tireme
  • The Tireme was a technological marvel, the fastest ship in the world at that time, rowed up to by 170 men on three levels and was very agile and fast and could even be used as a battering ram
  • Another great military weapon was the phalanx.
  • close rank, dense grouping of warriors
  • Armed with long spears and interlocking shields
  • The soldiers would advance slowly toward the enemy, until they would break through their ranks

These are all the notes I took today and it looks like tomorrow we are learning about the Persians and the Persian war which was a very important enemy to the greeks overall.

A certain person in the class wanted me to keep my mouth shut but didn't listen. he he he. So after not listening to a certain person they want to exile me. So today off to a great start.so right now I have that certain person giving me the death stare which if she remembers correctly I found her wallet. ooooo scary.

project pt 2

So today were worked on our project in which I completed the part about homer and the epics he told as he traveled around Greece to each city state and the trojan war and how many people thought that it was fake until a German archaeologist may have found proof that it really happened.

Go Big or Go Homer
Homer was a greek storyteller who was very famous for his story telling of  “The Iliad” and “ The Odyssey”. The Iliad was one of the last conquests of the Mycenaeans (Trojan war). The Odyssey was the story of odysseus and his attempts to return home after the trojan war, and constantly being thwarted by the god of the sea poseidon who was jealous of odysseus because many said he was more famous and powerful than the god himself. It contains 12,110 lines of dactylic hexameter. Little is known of Homer's personal life, except that he was blind. His stories were known as epics sometime between 750-700 BCE. Homer would travel from city state to city state telling his epics about greeks gods. Storyteller such as homer caused myths og the gods to be created and many thought of them to be real. There is actually a question named after Homer. The homeric question. The questions is asking if homer was a actual person or a mythical character such as the gods. Many thought of Homer as a blind wandering minstrel and a heroic figure. One of Homer's famous epic the story of odyssey is thought to be a myth because how can a blind man remember all of these topics. In the story it took odysseus years to return home after fighting a war for years. There is also a enemy called polyphemus who is a cyclops or a huge person with one eye and this is thought to be fake because there is no such evidence that cyclops have ever existed. This is all apart of the Homeric question.

Troy Story
The Trojan war was one of the most famous wars thought to be fought by the greeks in the 1200s BCE. The mycenaeans fought a ten year long war against Troy which is a trading city in Anatolia. According to legend a greek army had besieged and destroyed Troy because a Trojan prince had kidnapped Helen, the wife of a greek king. For many years historians thought that the stories of the trojan war were fake and just myths but excavations conducted in the north west of turkey during the 1830s conducted by a german archaeologist named Heinrich schliemann may reveal that the stories of the trojan war may be based on real events and real cities based on real people. Although the origin of the Trojan war remains unclear, but this attack on troy was certainly apart of the one of the last Mycenaean battle campaigns. A famous story of the war was that the greeks tricked the trojans used a large wooden horse to deceive the trojans and raided the city and captured it by hiding inside the horse.

Direct democracy

Today we didn't really get many notes but we did do a lot of discussions. The notes we took today we learned that 1/5 of athenians were citizens so only 1/5 of the people who lived in Athens were wealthy land owners, born in Athens, and were adult male who were free. But when Cleisthenes came to power more regular citizens were able to participate in the council of five hundred. We also learned what a direct democracy was. It when the state is ruled by its citizens. Rule is based on citizenship, majority rule decides vote and it was first practiced under Cleisthenes in Athens around 500 BCE. These are pretty much the only notes I was able to take so this is going to be a shorter blog mainly because we had large discussions about different topics.

The Rome test

So today we had our Rome test and for the first time in history of my class it was a open blog test. I didn't have all the answers but I...
